The Awakened One, A Straightforward Buddha Calligraphy

The 8th day of the 12th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, and the 8th of December in Japan, Zen and Mahayana Buddhists commemorate the enlightenment of the Buddha of our time and world, Śākyamuni Buddha.

I would like to celebrate this Bodhi day with a new calligraphy of the 佛 Buddha kanji, Japanese ''butsu', Chinese 'fo'. The word Buddha stems from the Sanskrit 'budh', which means to 'awake', hence Buddha means 'the awakened one'.

With this Buddha calligraphy I also want to recall the core of the teachings of the sixth Zen Patriarch, the Chinese Master Hui-neng:

Good and Wise Fiends Bodhi is just the purity of your own nature. Attend only to this and you will straightaway achieve Buddhadhood.
