Description
This calligraphy brushed in a bold semi-cursive style, shows the Japanese phrase 諸惡莫作衆善奉行, shoaku makusa shuzen bugyo, meaning 'Do not do evil, Do all that is good’.
諸悪莫作: shoaku makusa, do not do evil
衆善奉行: shuzen bugyo, do all that is good
These two lines express the fundamental moral precepts of a Buddhist practitioner and the very body of the Buddhist teachings.
The lines are found in many Buddhist texts, amongst others in the Dhammapada and the Nirvana Sutra where the full verse says:
Do not do evil,
Cultivate all that is good,
Purify your own mind,
This is the teaching of all the Buddhas.
