Your image gets printed directly onto a sheet of 1/16" thick aluminum. The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. Hui-neng, the sixth Zen Patriarch, in his verse at the end of the Prajna chapter of the Platform Sutra says:
世人若修道
一切盡不妨
"If people of the world cultivate the Way,
Nothing at all can hinder them; "
