Artist's Description
This calligraphy renders a verse from chapter 29 of the Diamond Sutra or Vajracchedika Sutra.
The calligraphy shows the kanji for the following phrase:
' Tathagata is called one who has not gone anywhere, not come from anywhere.'
(Translation by Edward Conze, Buddhist Wisdom)
The Japanese translation for Tathagata is Nyorai and means literally "come thus"
如 Nyo - thus, as it is,
来 Rai - to come
In modern Japan Nyorai is synonymous with Buddha, and expresses the highest degree of respect.
I love the words Tathagata and Nyorai, they are to my ears like a subtle music from the infinite.
