Description
This original calligraphy brushed in a delicate semi-cursive style, shows the Japanese phrase SHOAKU MAKUSA, SHUZEN BUGYO, meaning 'Do not do anything evil, Cultivate all that is good'. These two lines express the fundamental precepts of a Buddhist. They are taken from a poem from the Dhammapada, the earliest known Buddhist scriptures. The full verse says:
Do not do anything evil,
Cultivate all that is good,
Purify your own mind,
This is the teaching of all the Buddhas.
